Applying for a provisional licence

First things first, before you can even get into a car and start learning to drive, you have to get hold of a provisional driving licence. To apply for this, you must complete the application form D1 that's available from either the 'Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) form ordering service', or from your local Post Office. It takes about 4 weeks for your application to be processed and for your licence to be sent to you - so if you want to start learning as soon as you hit 17, make sure you apply early!

Learning to Drive - The steps to success

We know everyone is different!

We individually craft our lesson plans around you. Whether you find learning to drive a daunting prospect or a stimulating adventure our modern tuition methods make driving a practical challenge you can meet.

Tuition and practice

Our lessons introduce the correct driving techniques and develop anticipation skills and road sense. You will learn how to drive with confidense in traffic, negotiating junctions, roundabouts and pedestrian crossings safely. Advanced lessons introduce driving on dual carriageways, negotiating crossroads, reversing and parking maneouvres.

Practice makes perfect

Initially we’ll take you to quiet areas, where you can master road position, steering and clutch control in complete safety. You’ll get to grips with town driving and later we’ll take you on some of the busiest roads and roundabouts in the area. We’ll practice on routes which may well come up in your practical test. You’ll become an accomplished driver who knows many of the roads and areas around Edinburgh & The Lothians - if not by name!

The Practical Driving Test

On the day of the practical driving test your instructor will pick you up and take you to the driving test centre. Prior to the practical test you will undertake an eye test and the Show Me Tell Me oral test called the mechanical safety check. The practical test takes 35-40 minutes with an examiner from the test centre. During your drive you are allowed no dangerous or serious faults and a maximum of 15 minor errors.
